Troupe Student Classes

TROUPE

Students learn jazz routines in Troupe classes that are performed in competitions.  Planetdance competes in 4-5 eisteddfods a year.  Students are invited to be a part of these teams.  New students or students from the fun stream are permitted to trial these classes in the first few weeks of term and Miss Jade will determine whether they are at the right level to join these teams.  These classes can also be used to rehearse routines of other styles for competitions.  Classes involve a warm up and jazz technical progressions until 10/u troupe where a separate class is picked up.for this.

BALLET

Planetdance teaches the R.A.D. syllabus. With over 13,000 members spread across 83 countries, the R.A.D. is one of the largest and most influential dance education and training institutions in the world.   Students are required to do one class a week in Pre-Primary and Primary ballet grades, two classes a week for grades 1-5, and 3 classes a week for Majors.  Ballet exams are optional for troupe students although ballet is compulsory if you would like to represent Planetdance in these teams.

TAP

Planetdance teaches the Tapatak Oz syllabus.  This syllabus was created by Christine Denny and aims to put the fun back into Tap whilst engaging the students and giving them a firm understanding of rhythm and its possibilities!  Exams are optional.  Super troupe tap classes are by invitation only and are used to create tap teams for eisteddfods.  Last year we had several undefeated age groups by creating these elite tap teams.

MODERN

Our modern classes are a mix of stretch and strength work combined with lyrical and contemporary choreography. This style of dance has become increasingly popular due to shows like 'So You Think You Can Dance'.  Modern is a compulsory class for all students in troupe from 8 and under troupe and up.

MUSICAL THEATRE

Planetdance is proud to boast that it is one of the leading performing arts schools in Sydney focusing on musical theatre. This year we have 2 students performing in the cast of 'Annie' at 'The Lyric Theatre' and 3 students performing in the cast of 'Love Never Dies' at 'The Capitol Theatre'.  Our graduates have also continued into professional productions such as 'Wicked' and 'Spring Awakening'.  Our musical theatre classes involve script work, group singing tuition and authentic musical theatre choreography.  These classes have become so popular that we stage a completely separate musical theatre concert each year.  Planetdance aims to produce triple threat performers who have the best tools they need to succeed in the industry.

HIP HOP

Our Hip Hop classes are available for students from 10/u troupe and up.  Before this, students will include a hip hop combo in their troupe classes but concentrate on their jazz fundamentals.  Hip hop classes at the Planet embrace many styles including lyrical hip hop, tutting, popping and locking and commercial styles.  Hip Hop teams also compete in competitions throughout the year. Planetdance is proud to have 4 members in the 'Lil Banditz Krew' who are about to make a big impact on television screens in 2012.

B-BOY and B-GIRL CLASSES

Brand new classes starting in 2012.  One of the industry leaders in B-Boy training will be joining our team.  This will give our students the edge with new skills in the basics of breaking and B-Boy style.

PILATES 4 DANCERS

Introducing 'Pilates 4 Dancers' to our timetable in 2012.  Miss Kristen, the head of our ballet department and a well respected pilates instructor has developed this new class.   Kathryn Morgan, Principle with the New York City Ballet Company fully supports pilates training for dancers. "For overall strengthening, pilates is my secret trick. I do it religiously. It has completely changed my dancing for the better. It strengthens every muscle in your body (especially your core) and yet lengthens them at the same time. So no bulk! I have also found that I have become more limber doing pilates. It is the perfect exercise for dancers."

SINGING LESSONS

This year Planetdance graduate, Robert Jeffrey is commencing work as a singing teacher at Planetdance.  Robert has won a Mo Award and an ACE Award as well as just finishing his tour of Wicked.  Small group singing lessons are an affordable way to ensure students are getting an all-round performing arts education and are prioritising their singing.
