What is Jazz dance?

Rhythm, technique and the freedom to perform.

Jazz is a lively, expressive dance style built around rhythm and musicality. It combines kicks, turns, leaps and travelling steps with isolations—moving one part of the body, such as the shoulders or hips, independently. A routine might be sharp and powerful, smooth and flowing, or playful and theatrical.

In class, dancers develop the coordination, strength, flexibility and control to perform these movements, then bring them together in choreography. Music is central: dancers learn to hear the beat, respond to accents and give the movement their own expression.

Where will your child see it?

Jazz appears in musical theatre, school productions and dance concerts, with its influence also seen in music videos and live pop performances. In NSW, the Schools Spectacular jazz program is a familiar example of these skills coming together in group choreography.

For your child, those skills can help them learn a routine for a school musical, keep in time with a dance ensemble, or perform at a Planetdance concert. Jazz gives them a practical foundation for enjoying dance and exploring other performance styles.
